- While browsing my infoworld, I ran across the below words. the "No
- Amiga," part immediately got a frown, it turns out this article spoke highly
- of our machine.

-
- No Amiga, an assembler screen saver can't rescue a broken-down T-bird
-
- BY ROBERT X. CRINGELY
-
-
- Publication Date: November 13, 1995 (Vol. 17, Issue 46)
-
- Every few minutes an 18-wheeler blows past me on Highway 190, shaking the car
- as it passes. Climbing out of Stovepipe Wells and aiming for Beatty, Nev.,
- their plan is to get the hell out of Death Valley. That was my plan, too,
- until the T-bird let me down. Now I'm stranded in the Funeral Mountains,
- trying to E-mail the California Highway Patrol for help.
-
- Amiga amigo
-
- At least Pammy's not with me. After several years of speeding tickets and some
- minor jail time, this year she insisted on flying to Comdex. I, on the other
- hand, being a member of the stupider sex, chose to drive my new-old car. Big
- mistake. At least I have RadioMail (cringe@radiomail.net) to write for help.
-
- And things were going so well. Death Valley is beautiful this time of year and
- the car ran fine until it suddenly didn't. I even had a scoop of sorts,
- something I know you won't find anywhere else in InfoWorld: the Amigas are
- back. Amiga Technologies, the German company that bought the carcass of
- Commodore, has already shipped 12,000 Amiga 4000s in Europe and plans to next
- year introduce a new system based on the Motorola 68060. Then in early '97
- comes the PowerAmiga, using a PowerPC. Apple will apparently help with the
- software on that one.
-
- More good news on the "are they still selling those?" front: EDS just sold
- 400,000 copies of OS/2 Warp to the U.S. Navy, which passed on both Windows 95
- and Windows NT. One of the things the sailors liked is how IBM's Directory and
- Security Services will now bolt straight onto LANServer 4, allowing
- management of an enterprise network from an OS/2 workstation. It didn't hurt,
- either, that beta testers report OS/2 Warp Connect Server (there's a mouthful)
- has some real advantages over NT Server. It's amazing what IBM can do with 10
- years and $3 billion.
-
- This Java's not hot
-
- The car suddenly quit when I hit a steep part of the climb toward Daylight
- Pass. My theory is that changing the angle of the car sent a big gulp of gas
- in to flood the engine. But what do I know?
-
- I know that Windows 95 users who are having trouble with PPP connections can
- blame their PPP server for being too good. Win95's CIPX packets are created
- with a dyslexic field length that leads to rejection
- by servers written to spec.
-
- I know that Sun Microsystems hasn't yet shipped the September (!) issue of its
- Catalyst CDware (a CD-ROM full of Sun ISV software and product literature)
- because it switched to using Sun's Java language to write the interface.
-
- Finally, I know the coolest software I've seen in a long time is Steve
- Gibson's ChromaZone, an infinitely modifiable $24.95 screen saver for Windows.
- I know, screen savers are a yawner, but what's interesting about ChromaZone is
- not just that it's neat, but that Steve (a digital dinosaur) wrote the
- whole thing in assembler. The result is a superfast 99KB file that includes a
- complete user interface, help system, and 100 sample screens. Have we been
- duped by C++? I think so.
-
- Now if Steve would only write an office suite. Gibson Research is at (800)
- 736-0637.
-
- Finally, a message was coming in! "Hey, Bobby, are you almost there?" wrote
- Pammy. "I'll meet you
- tonight at the Mirage."
-
- "You're missing a heck of a trip," I wrote back. "This car's so smooth you can
- hardly even feel it move."
-
- I know, I know. So send me an industry secret along with your criticism. I'm
